Nestled between the north and west branhes of the Susquehanna River is the town of Northumberland, a small town that played a large role in Pennsylvania's history. Founded in 1772, Northumberland served as an important central hub for stagecoaches, canal barges and trains that served the growing needs of the growing state. In fact, Northumberland came within one vote of being selected the state capital. Since then it has grown and yet remained a charming example of a Pennsylvania town."
