Because it was settled along the banks of the Susquehanna River, Selinsgrove has always served as an important town for commerce. During the middle of the 19th century Selinsgrove experienced a strong economic boom due to the canal systems and railroads that passed through the area. The strong economy, combined with the founding of Susquehanna University, attracted new residents and before long Selinsgrove became the marketplace for the entire county. The wealth the town experienced during this time is evident in the architecture. Buildings along Market Street are built in Victorian, Colonial and Contemporary styles and help to give Selinsgrove its unique flavor and charm".
